Tire Care & Maintenance - Gillespie Ford in Gurnee

Tire Experts

Tires degrade over time depending on many factors such as weather, storage conditions, and conditions of use (load, speed, inflation pressure, etc.) the tires experience throughout their lives. If you are like the majority of U.S. motorists, especially living in the Midwest, you have experienced challenging road conditions and you want to make sure your vehicle’s tires are in optimal condition to handle such conditions. In general, Ford Motor Company recommends tires should be replaced after six years regardless of tread wear. You should replace your spare tire when you replace the road tires or after six years due to aging, even if it has not been used.

Luckily, the experts at Gillespie Ford, your local Ford Dealership located 8 minutes west of Six Flags Great America on Grand Ave., are here to help. We have the right tires for your vehicle and we are the best place for any other service your vehicle needs, including tire rotation, wheel alignment, and more. The Facts

  • On average, tires lose around 1lb. per square inch (psi) of pressure a month and lose an additional 1 psi for every 10-degree drop in outside temperature.
  • The more tread on your tires, the more control you'll have - especially in wet road conditions - and the shorter the distance required to stop your vehicle while braking.
  • Rotating your tires can help you get the most out of them by distributing wear more evenly. Any unusual tire wear patterns can be exposed, indicating premature tire wear and external factors.
  • Ford Motor Company suggests you equip your vehicle with the same type of tires and  tread design as were originally equipped on your vehicle.
  • When purchasing new tires from Gillespie Ford, you will receive expert care from us including complete tire inspection for proper inflation and wear.
  • Our factory-trained experts, can help you get the most out of your tires by providing you with simple maintenance tips.

Quick Tips

  • It is a smart idea to check your tires' condition and pressure at least once a month for longer and better performance.
  • All it takes is a penny! Put one upside down in your tire's tread grooves, if Lincoln's hair is visible, the tread has worn to less than 2/32 of an inch.
  • Learn the maximum inflation pressure of each tire. This number is molded into the tire sidewall as required by the government.
  • Learn the operating vehicle tire inflation pressure, which is normally lower than the maximum inflation pressure. It is found on a Certification Decal or Tire Decal, and is usually located on the driver's door, door pillar, or in the glove box.
  • Consult your owner's manual for frequency and tire rotation patterns or contact our experts to inspect your tires.

Time for New Tires, if:

  • They are more then six years old
  • The tread has worn down between 2/32 and 4/32 of an inch
  • Bulges, blisters, or bubbles
  • Cracking in the tread grooves
  • Punctures, cuts, snags, or separation in tire tread, shoulder, or sidewall
  • Sudden loss of tire pressure
  • Poor handling or traction on slippery surfaces
  • Pulling to one side while driving
  • Sudden vibration while driving
  • Tires that have been driven while flat
